New Zealand
Fallow Buck

Fallow Buck Hunts

Fallow Buck hunting in New Zealand offers a unique and rewarding experience for both rifle and bowhunters. Originally introduced from Europe, Fallow Deer have flourished in New Zealand’s diverse landscapes and are now a popular and well-managed game species.

Known for their elegant antlers and stunning coats - which come in four distinct colour phases (white, menil, melanistic, and common) - these deer are as beautiful as they are challenging to hunt. We offer both free-range and estate hunt options, giving you access to a variety of terrain and trophy potential. Whether you're stalking through native bush or glassing open hillsides, Fallow Buck hunting is an exciting, rewarding pursuit — and as a bonus, their venison is some of the finest wild game meat you’ll ever taste.

Free Range & Estate
Fallow Buck Hunts

We recommend setting aside 5 days for your Fallow Buck hunt to allow ample time to explore the terrain, locate mature bucks, and enjoy a relaxed, rewarding experience. Whether you choose to hunt one of our free-range blocks or opt for a more controlled estate environment, you’ll return each evening to the comfort of our Wanaka Lodge. Enjoy chef-prepared meals, hot showers, and stunning views after a day in the field — the perfect balance of adventure and luxury.

5-Day Fallow Hunts

The best time to hunt Fallow Buck in New Zealand is during their rut, or “roar,” which takes place in April. During this time, bucks become highly vocal and active, making for an exciting and dynamic hunt. The fallow roar often overlaps with the Red Stag rut, making April the perfect month to combine both species into a single, unforgettable trip.

Whether you're looking for a uniquely coloured coat or an impressive set of palmated antlers, the fallow rut offers incredible opportunities in some of New Zealand’s most scenic hunting country.

Additional Game

While you’re hunting Fallow during the Roar, there’s an incredible opportunity to add other iconic species to your adventure. Elk and New Zealand Red Stag are both in excellent condition at this time of year, offering the chance to pursue multiple trophies in one trip.

Late March and April also mark a prime window for early-season Tahr hunting, before winter conditions fully set in. Combining these species creates an unforgettable, world-class hunting experience across New Zealand’s diverse landscapes — just let us know what you’d like to include, and we’ll help you build the ultimate multi-species hunt.
