Located just North of Wanaka in the South Island is our base camp for all of our Tahr hunts.
Tahr are regarded as the monarchs of the mountains, one of the only animals in the world apart from a lion that has a mane. They have three colour phases, Summer coats which are light blonde, winter which is the most sort after with a heavy dark coat with light streaks in the mane through to spring being a mix of light brown to blond colours.
If you want to experience a free range hunt for Tahr, we highly recommend allowing 5 - 7 days for rifle and up to 7-10 days for bow.
Accessed by 4x4 or private helicopter, our free range Tahr hunts are for some the adventure of a lifetime in some of the most pristine and wild country that New Zealand has to offer.
5 Day Free Range Tahr Hunt

We offer a 5-day adventure of living in the hills and hunting the majestic bull Tahr, which will test your skills and stamina. Our goal is to enable our hunters to enjoy a true free-range hunting experience unlike any other.
There is the option to return to our Wanaka Lodge each day, our for a true outback country experience, you have the option to set up a wilderness camp and stay in the mountains.
This all-inclusive hunt is designed to deliver an unforgettable alpine adventure. Your $7,000 package covers everything: your Tahr trophy, private lodge or wilderness camp accommodation, chef-prepared meals, guided hunting with an experienced PH, airport transfers, hunting license, field trophy preparation, trophy photos, and even the use of firearms and ammunition if needed.

Prime Tahr Hunting
The prime time to hunt Bull Tahr in New Zealand is during the rut in May, when mature bulls are most active and visible across the alpine slopes. Winter conditions from May through August also offer the best opportunity to see these incredible animals in their full winter mane - thick, striking, and at their absolute finest.
For hunters seeking a true trophy experience, this season delivers unmatched adventure and scenery.
Tahr are true alpine animals, and hunting them requires a moderate to good level of fitness. Even with helicopter access, hunters should expect uphill hiking and challenging mountain terrain.
