Located just North of Wanaka in the South Island is our base camp for all of our Tahr hunts.

Tahr are regarded as the monarchs of the mountains, one of the only animals in the world apart from a lion that has a mane. They have three colour phases, Summer coats which are light blonde, winter which is the most sort after with a heavy dark coat with light streaks in the mane through to spring being a mix of light brown to blond colours.

If you want to experience a free range hunt for Tahr, we highly recommend allowing 5 - 7 days for rifle and up to 7-10 days for bow.

Accessed by 4x4 or private helicopter, our free range Tahr hunts are for some the adventure of a lifetime in some of the most pristine and wild country that New Zealand has to offer.

There is the option to return to our Wanaka Lodge each day, our for a true outback country experience, you have the option to set up a wilderness camp and stay in the mountains.

Prime Tahr Hunting

The prime time to hunt Bull Tahr in New Zealand is during the rut in May, when mature bulls are most active and visible across the alpine slopes. Winter conditions from May through August also offer the best opportunity to see these incredible animals in their full winter mane - thick, striking, and at their absolute finest.

For hunters seeking a true trophy experience, this season delivers unmatched adventure and scenery.

Tahr are true alpine animals, and hunting them requires a moderate to good level of fitness. Even with helicopter access, hunters should expect uphill hiking and challenging mountain terrain.

Designed specifically for groups of two or more hunters, these seven-day hunting expeditions take you deep into remote alpine country in pursuit of New Zealand's iconic Himalayan Tahr. Combining exceptional free-range hunting with an elevated backcountry camping experience, this is an opportunity to experience the Southern Alps as few ever will.

Weather permitting, a helicopter flight will provide access to remote alpine terrain, opening the door to vast hunting country far beyond the reach of conventional access. Once established in the mountains, you'll hunt from a fully equipped alpine camp, surrounded by rugged peaks, glacial valleys and breathtaking wilderness.

Our camps are designed to deliver the most comfortable alpine hunting experience we can provide. Choose between traditional canvas wall tents or tipis, complete with wood-burning fires, comfortable sleeping arrangements and chef-prepared meals. After demanding days exploring the mountains, return to camp, warm up beside the fire and enjoy quality food and good company in an incredible wilderness setting.
