Chamois Alpine Expeditions
Originally native to the European Alps, Chamois were introduced to New Zealand in 1907 as a gift from Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria. Since then, they’ve established themselves in the steep alpine terrain of the South Island’s Southern Alps.
Chamois thrive in rugged, high-altitude environments - think steep basins, shale slopes, and open ridgelines above the bushline. Known for their agility and keen eyesight, chamois are notoriously alert and elusive, making for a challenging and rewarding hunt.
Males and females sport distinctive black facial stripes, with sleek, short coats that grow into rich chocolate tones during winter. Both sexes carry hook-shaped horns, with bucks developing thicker bases and deeper curves.
Chamois can be hunted year-round, though their winter coats are prime from May to August.

These hunts take you deep into New Zealand’s remote backcountry, with the option to stay in a comfortable wilderness camp with wall tents with wood-burning stoves, chef-prepared meals, and incredible alpine views. Wilderness camps are weather dependent and require heli-access. We can acces our Chamois hunting ground by foot, returning to our Wanaka Lodge.
